Principal's Welcome

Thursday, July 19, 2018 - 12:30pm

Dear Escondido Elementary School Community,

I hope this letter finds you well and you had a restful and enjoyable summer. I want to officially welcome everyone to the 2018-2019 school year! We have been very busy on campus with summer camps, hiring new staff, and a little construction. Everything is progressing smoothly toward a great opening of school on Tuesday, August 14th. I greatly look forward to meeting and getting to know everyone in our wonderful school community as the school year progresses.

Our teachers are at work setting up their classrooms and designing lesson plans that promise to make for an exciting and productive year at Escondido Elementary. Many thanks to our site custodians, Mr. Sione Paletua, Mr. Eric Handa and Mr. Steve Odom, along with the District’s entire maintenance crew who have been working diligently to prepare our campus for the start of the new school year. A very special thank you goes to our office staff, Ms. Cristina Rodriguez and Ms. Davina Byrd, who are preparing to open our school office, enrolling new students, distributing classroom materials and supporting new staff. All we await for now is our fabulous Escondido students!

As the new principal of Escondido, I’d like to share with you some of my priorities for the school year. My primary goal is to ensure that all children are safe, happy and ready and engaged to learn and have the best possible educational experiences while at Escondido Elementary. I follow a collaborative and team-building approach and believe that differentiated, rigorous and developmentally appropriate and relevant instruction is key to achieving this goal. I base every decision I make on what is best for students. In the spirit of building a strong school team, I look forward to working with staff, parents and students throughout the year to identify areas for improvement in student social-emotional well-being and academic achievement, school climate, and communication.

Throughout the year school communication(s) will take place through our weekly newsletter, the school’s website, flyers and the weekly classroom Friday folder. Our first two Meet & Greet opportunities will take place on August 13th at our annual Ice Cream Social at 4:00 PM and August 14th at our First Day Coffee at 8:10 AM. Please feel free to stop by and join the conversation. If you have a question or concern about your student’s class, I encourage you to first contact your student's teacher directly. If you have further questions, comments, or concerns, after speaking to your student’s teacher please feel free to contact me by email or phone at or (650) 856-1337. If you need to schedule time to talk to me in person, please contact the school secretary, Cristina Rodriguez, to schedule an appointment.

The staff at Escondido truly believes that every child has the ability to work diligently to meet their goals and excel. Escondido teachers are highly-skilled and work closely together to plan and implement an engaging academic curriculum in-line with the Common Core standards. Our teachers follow and incorporate curriculum adopted by the PAUSD in their instructional activities. For reading and writing, we implement a workshop model based on the Reading & Writing Units of Study developed by Teacher’s College at Columbia University.

Teachers implement Responsive Classroom strategies to teach social, emotional and management skills to students and build a positive school climate. Our Math curriculum is Bridges in Mathematics and Eureka Math for the Spanish Immersion classrooms. For science, we will continue to use Full Option Science System (FOSS) hands-on materials. New this year to all K-5 classrooms is the Social Studies Alive curriculum published by the Teachers’ Curriculum Institute.

As I think about the staff, students and parents who make up our community, I can’t help but conclude that this is a wonderful place for learning. I look forward to spending a lot of time in the classrooms with students, getting to know their personalities, learning styles and interests. Once again, I am so thankful to have the opportunity to bring all that I have experienced and learned in my career to the Escondido community.
